A deck is a structure first and a surface second
The boards you walk on are the part everyone looks at, but what determines whether a deck lasts is underneath — the footings, how the ledger is attached to the house, and how the framing is spaced. Those are also the parts that are expensive to go back and fix, which is why they get scoped carefully before anything gets built.

When an existing deck is the starting point, the first question is whether the structure underneath is sound. A deck with good footings and solid framing can often take new boards and a fresh finish and be worth doing. One with movement at the ledger or deteriorating framing is a different conversation — putting new surface boards over a structure that's failing just hides the problem for a season or two. We'll tell you which one you have.
Ground conditions shape a patio the same way footings shape a deck. How the yard drains and how the base is prepared decide whether pavers stay level, so that gets looked at before any surface goes down. On the walkthrough we'll talk about how you actually want to use the space — seating, grilling, shade, traffic to and from the house — because that changes the layout more than the material choice does.
Deck and patio questions we get asked
Can my old deck be saved, or does it need to come down?
That depends on the framing and footings, not on how the surface looks. Weathered boards on a sound structure are usually worth replacing. Movement at the ledger or deteriorating framing points toward a rebuild. We look at the structure before giving you an answer either way.
Do you do patios and pavers as well as wood decks?
Yes. Some yards suit a raised deck, some suit a patio at grade, and some end up with both. Which makes sense depends on the grade of the yard and how you get to the space from the house — that's part of what we walk through on site.
When is the right time of year to start?
